An update on advocacy efforts - July 2023

The Calgary Condo Institute has been at the forefront of lobbying for reforms that directly address the concerns of our community. By collaborating with industry stakeholders and leveraging the collective voice of our members, we have focused on key areas that impact condo owners and residents in Calgary. Our lobbying initiatives include:

  1. Electricity Rebates for Condominiums: We have been advocating for retroactive utility rebates for residential condominium corporations that were unjustly excluded from utility affordability rebate programs. This initiative aims to alleviate the financial burden faced by condo unit owners due to increased condominium fees resulting from higher utility costs.

How this benefits you: By securing retroactive rebates, we can ensure equitable relief for Calgary condo owners.

  1. Condominium Dispute Tribunal: The establishment of a Condominium Dispute Tribunal has been a key focus of our lobbying efforts. This tribunal would serve as a dedicated platform for resolving conflicts and disputes that arise between condo owners and condo boards.

What this does for you: By pushing for the implementation of this tribunal, we aim to provide efficient and fair dispute resolution processes tailored to the unique needs of Calgary condo communities.

  1. Condominium Building Retrofitting Grant and Green Energy Program: We have actively lobbied for the introduction of a comprehensive retrofitting grant and green energy program. This initiative aims to support Calgary condo owners in making necessary building upgrades, enhancing energy efficiency, and reducing long-term operational costs.

What this does for you: Advocating for financial incentives and grants will ease the financial burden on both owners and management staff, aiding both parties in fostering a sustainable and resilient condo community in Calgary.

  1. Updating the Condominium Property Act: Our lobbying efforts have focused on advocating for updates to the Condominium Property Act. We aim to work collaboratively with the Alberta Government to address gaps in the legislation, enhance governance practices, and resolve problematic issues faced by Calgary condo owners.

What this does for you: By modernizing the Condominium Property Act, we can ensure a more equitable and harmonious living environment.

  1. Condominium Database: We have stressed the importance of establishing a comprehensive condominium database in Alberta, including Calgary.

What this does for you: This database would provide valuable demographic information about Calgary's condo communities, enabling government agencies and stakeholders to better understand and meet the specific needs of condo owners and residents in our city.

These lobbying initiatives, if successful, would have a tangible impact on condo owners and residents in Calgary. Retroactive utility rebates would alleviate financial burdens and contribute to more affordable living. The establishment of a Condominium Dispute Tribunal would promote timely and fair resolutions for condo owners.
